Our main topic today is Apollo 45 years later and why we don’t want a repeat of the past. Our next humans on the Moon or Mars should be there to stay, not just flags and footprints!

In Space News we have:
Orbital Sciences Antares Cygnes Launch, SpaceX Falcon 9 Orbcomm launch, Russia launches a Foton satellite via Soyuz, ESA Rosetta Update, UAE going to Mars in 2021, ISRO going to Mars again, UKs first Space Port and a Bonsai tree in space?

I cannot recommend enough for anyone interested in the history of Apollo and the missions to the moon, the HBO Miniseries “From the Earth to The Moon”. Exec-Produced by Tom Hanks, it really highlights some of the human elements along with the technical achievements. It was produced shortly after Apollo 13 was done, and go together like PB&J.

    Grreetings!

I feel I must correct a bit on what Neil DeGrasse had said about private entities and space exploration. What Neil was frothing about was about frontiers. Frontiers with unkown dangers, risks and costs.
Neil, I believe, might have even used bad wording to flavour his argument but space rocketry is not and unkown frontier! Rocket propulsion is well known and understood as is the avionics involved. For Private entities the execution of just how they put everything together is what they have to develop and fine tune. Yes it’s rockets science but not re-inventing the consept.

What I think Neil is right about comes right after we get to Mars as it has not been done before and involves a fair amount of unkowns. Mars habitation may be more difficult that we persieve currently. But there is ongoing research tackling just that. Personally I think the idea of first builing a base/habitat on the Moon is the first step to Mars.

    Yada yada yada,

I think Dr. Tyson really just wanted to say that traditionally private ventures are not the flags and footprints, or the frontier settlers, without government backing and/or existing business plan with a return on investment. And I think he is largely correct.

However, I think someone like Elon Musk talks the talk, and walks the walk, about a private company leading the way, for the grander goals of settlement of humanity on other planets. He is a private company, but one that is being lead by someone with idealist goals that don’t really have a business plan to back up (at least not until 20 years down the road)

Have you heard about this ? 200 Ancient lava pits and cave have been found on the Moon by the LRO probe, and some claim that they could be used to give shelter to a moonbase, protecting from radiation and meteorites.
