    Actually, I think ESA is paying the participants of the Mars-experiment some basic salary. Probably not much compared to a real salary but still something. And you don't have to pay for your daily food or other needs while you are in the experiment.

    I got my chat comment wrong about STS-129: it's 3 launch attempts available over 4 days, not the other way around. And that's if they can negotiate with the Delta rocket that wants to use the range after the 16th, I think.

    According to Wiki, “Project Orion was the first engineering design study of a spacecraft powered by nuclear pulse propulsion, an idea proposed first by Stanisław Ulam during 1947. The project, initiated in 1958, envisioned the explosion of atomic bombs behind the craft and was led by Ted Taylor at General Atomics and physicist Freeman Dyson, who at Taylor's request took a year away from the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton to work on the project.”

    Then there is this part, “Igor Lisov, a Moscow-based expert on Russian space program, said the prospective ship would use a nuclear reactor to run an electric rocket engine.” which was in comments equated to the original Orion which was then brought up on-air. The big different being this is an electric powered motor powered by a nuclear reaction rather than nuclear pulse propulsion, but we were commenting on the “Original Orion” comment made during the show, which can be seen at the bottom of the screen.

    No one is seriously considering using nuclear bombs to go to Mars. You two need to at least glance over a Wikipedia page before going live. Nuclear powered space craft are completely different than the Orion Project.
